The Main Building of the University of Dunaújváros (UoD) was built more than 70 years ago (1953), and significant modernization works have been carried out over the past year and a half. The ceremonial handover took place on January 14th, 2025.
Among the buildings of the University of Dunaújváros, the main building is the only original "social-real" building.
The investment in the renovation of the building with a usable floor area of 6,400 m2 is nearly 4.7 billion forints, which was financed by the Foundation for the University of Dunaújváros with pre-financing from Hungarian MBH Bank Bankholding. The construction work, which started in the summer of 2023, was carried out by the main contractor ZÁÉV Construction co. Ltd.
The ceremonial handover was attended by Balázs Hankó, Minister of Culture and Innovation, Veronika Varga-Bajusz, State Secretary for Higher Education, Vocational and Adult Education and Youth, János Süli, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the University of Dunaújváros, Dr. Dr. András István, Rector, Dr. Krisztián Molnár, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Fejér County Assembly and the Foundation for the University of Dunaújváros, Dr. Lajos Mészáros, Member of Parliament and István Antal, Business Development Director of Delta Systems Ltd.
Balázs Hankó, the Minister of Culture and Innovation, said that just as the University of Dunaújváros and its main building have been renewed in recent years, the entire Hungarian higher education system has been renewed since 2021. DUE is a clear proof of the success of the model-changing universities, as the number of students has doubled in recent years, and more than 7% of them are foreign students, which means that the university has made progress in education by international standards. "We are proud that one of the most significant elements of the 400 billion euros of development in higher education in recent years has taken place here in Dunaújváros," the Minister stressed.
János Süli, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, pointed out that the educational spaces of the Main Building can accommodate a total of 772 students at a time. He also stressed that in recent years, DUE has established the Paks Competence and Research Centre, which has obtained accredited status in autumn 2024.
Rector Dr. István András expressed his pleasure that students can now continue their studies in such demanding and modern conditions. This 21st century reconstruction will result in an exceptionally high-quality learning and working environment for students and colleagues alike.
Dr. Krisztán Molnár, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Fejér County Assembly and the University of Dunaújváros Foundation, emphasized that one of the greatest developments among the universities operating in Fejér County has taken place in Dunaújváros in the recent period. He expressed the hope that developments will continue at the same pace in the coming years.
Dr. Lajos Mészáros, Member of Parliament, stated that DUE is an important institution for the city. In recent years, he has been the guest of ceremonial handovers (e.g. the DUFiókák Workplace Day Nursery) and cooperation agreements on several occasions. All these, in his view, prove that UoD has a place in the region.
István Antal, business development director of Delta Systems Ltd., said about the building energy upgrade of the renewed main building that the complex building automation system they installed could reduce the building's energy consumption by at least 25% through 2,690 sensors and intervention devices.
In her toast, Dr. Veronika Varga-Bajusz, State Secretary for Higher Education, Vocational and Adult Education and Youth, highlighted that the renovation of the building is an excellent symbol of how a higher education institution can renew itself, become an intellectual and innovation centre of the region by introducing exemplary and innovative practices, while at the same time achieving success at national and international level. She said that the university is a good example of how the model change introduced in higher education can take development and improvement to an even higher level: without the work of the Foundation and the Board of Trustees, the renovation of the main building, which is now home to the knowledge and opportunities of young Hungarians, would not have been possible.
At the end of the ceremony of the Main Building's inauguration, the guests had the opportunity to view an exhibition by Bahget Iskander, a former gold graduate of the University of Dunaújváros, who is a photographer.
