The European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) is the biggest Europe-wide initiative raising awareness of sustainable resource and waste management during a single week.

This year, the European Week for Waste Reduction will take place from 21 to 29 November 2020 and will encourage us to think about how we can reduce the amount of waste we have in our households, workplaces, schools, kindergartens, businesses during our activities or just when we are resting and spening our free time.

What kind of initiative is the European Waste Reduction Week?

The European Week for Waste Reduction is held in the last week of November each year. For a full week in the countries participating in the Sustainable Future Initiative in 2009, enthusiastic volunteers use their own ideas to raise awareness of conscious waste management, waste prevention, waste reduction, product reuse and the importance of material recycling. The main organizer, EWWR - European Week for Waste Reduction - deals with the problem of waste at European level.

The 2020 Week for Waste Reduction will be held from November 21-29. The Hungarian coordinator of the awareness-raising campaign in 2020, at the request and with the support of the State Secretariat for Construction, Infrastructure Environment and Sustainability of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology and  ÉMI Nonprofit Kft.

For a cleaner future - not just for a week!

The mission of European Week for Waste Reduction is to reach out to people and raise awareness of the importance of waste reduction. However, not only in this one week, but in the long run. The initiative aims to encourage people to consciously pay attention to their daily consumption habits in order to have a more livable, cleaner environment and a greener lifestyle. The European Waste Free Week is a great opportunity for communities, NGOs, educational institutions, individuals and institutions to raise awareness of the possibility of a cleaner future by implementing their innovative ideas for waste prevention.

Those who join the Week, by assessing their own local opportunities and circumstances, implement and make their ideas public, so that others can get to know them and serve as examples. The Week aims to prove that saving resources and attentive existence can significantly reduce the amount of waste generated and increase the life of materials.

Idea box of waste reduction

Every year, European Waste Reduction Week has a priority topic. This year’s focus is on invisible waste. What exactly does this mean? Wastes generated during production that cannot be seen when purchasing the product. You can read more about invisible waste HERE.

In addition to the invisible waste of 2020, you can, of course, register with any topic that draws attention to reducing waste, recycling products, and submitting fresh ideas to topics that have already been implemented in previous years.

When planning an action, it is important to keep in mind the “3R” theory, ie to reduce, reuse or recycle waste.
